On Wednesday evening of December 5, 2007 Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire/Rescue was toned out for a Structure Fire.  When the crew of Fireboat 11-5 led by Fire Chief Frank “Skip” Decker arrived at the fireboat they realized they were in need of calling for help themselves.

Fireboat 11-5 had sunk to the bottom of Smith Mountain Lake in approximately 20 feet of Water.  Chief Decker immediately apprised the other responding Fireboat crews of the situation so the necessary equipment was en-route to cover the call at hand.  Crews were not on scene of the structure fire when Chief Decker began accessing and assembling the necessary resources to recover their own Fireboat.  The Counties were notified, other key members of the Volunteer organization were notified and plans were beginning to formulate to start recovery operations.
